Jamaica: Blue Mountain, Clydesdale

from $50.00

This is one of the smoothest and most balanced coffees on the planet. Velvety smooth with mild acidity… fine chocolate… blackberry without the bramble but only the delicious dark fruit… tangy currant bordering on the slight sweetness of raisin. Some call it the Champagne of coffee… we call it the Burgundy… where the stealthy muscularity of maturity is throttled by wisdom and patience. You may not fancy yourself being a super spy. You may not be a famous novelist. You may not drink Jamaica Blue Mountain everyday but, at the very least, treat yourself on those special occasions… holidays, birthdays, Saturdays, Sundays… you draw the line. Drink responsibly, without dipping into the 401K, but drink on with joy and good pleasure.

Process: Washed… removal of all cherry fruit with the bean dried

Elevation: 3002-5000 feet

Aroma: Fine chocolate and berry

Flavor: Pure blackberry, not rustic and without the bramble… fine chocolate… tangy currant with the slight sweetness of raisin

Roast: Medium… beautifully balanced with velvety smooth body and mild acidity.

“The names Bond… James Bond.” Ian Fleming’s 1954 novel Live and Let Die has Bond assert “Blue Mountain Coffee - the most delicious in the world." In his 1956 novel From Russia, with Love Bond brews his Jamaica Blue “very strong” employing a “Chemex”, a then modern gadget. Fleming himself commented “I take a ridiculous pleasure in what I eat and drink” and certainly drank his share of the precious elixir while living and writing his novels in Goldeneye Jamaica. Approximately 52 miles south via southeast from Fleming’s northern coastal Goldeneye is the Blue Mountain’s Clydesdale region, located in St. Andrew Parish, where our coffee is cultivated on small familial farms. Mist shrouded mountains, cool temperatures, volcanic soil and frequent rainfall provide fantastic conditions.  The Jamaican Coffee Growers Association assembles our Blue Mountain’s small micro-lot collections, wash-processes and distributes this special gem for our enjoyment. The million-dollar question… is this coffee worth the price? The driving price force is supply and demand… 80 percent is purchased by Japan, which is completely obsessed with this coffee, leaving the rest of us to pay a premium for the remaining 20 percent. Well, although there are pundits who cry over-rated, the Japanese certainly love it and, frankly, it seems there are very knowledgeable connoisseurs willing to fork over the dough. For us, the answer is the result of character and flavor. Character is reflected in the high regulatory standards set by the Jamaica Commodities Regulatory Authority, but proof is in the flavor.
