In 1903 the United States supported Panama’s succession from Columbia allowing the 1904-1914 Panama Canal construction and perpetually linking the two counties geopolitical interest. The 51-mile lock modulated waterway through the Isthmus of Panama eliminated 8,000 of the total 13,328 nautical mile trip from New York City around the treacherous Cape Horn to San Francisco and stimulated massive economic forces via linkage of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

The 1903 Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty granted the United States indefinite administrative rights to the Panama Canal Zone.  The 1977 Torrijos-Carter treaty relinquished those rights, returning full control of the Canal back to Panama in 1999. In between was a 1989 United States invasion “Operation Just Cause” which successfully ousted the drug trafficking and corrupt dictator General Manuel Antonio Noriega and restored civilian constitutional government.

Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal is an engineering marvel, a political hot-potato and an economic juggernaut rolled into one. Bordered west by Costa Rica, east by Colombia, north by a 1547-mile Caribbean Sea coastline and south by a 1000-mile Pacific coastline, Panama is around one and quarter the size of West Virginia and, at 37-110 miles wide, one of the narrowest world countries.

Janson Farms cultivates and processes our brew in the Volcan Highlands coffee region in Chiriquí province on the outskirts of Las Perlas, approximately 25-miles due west of Costa Rica and a 311-mile drive along the Pan-American Highway due east to the capital Panama City. Located at 4429-5577 feet on the slopes of Tisingal and Baru volcanoes, using no pesticides or herbicides, Janson Farms micromanaged plots take advantage of the unique climate and volcanic terroir to produce what is regarded a connoisseur’s coffee… this is not to be high-handed but only to prepare one when approaching a Panama Geisha. The coffee is akin to the finest of consommé which after meticulous maceration provides the most delicate of savory essence… to enjoy such a thing one must slow down and take the time.  If time is not respected with a Panama Geisha, the delicate flavors will be missed, and the experience will be disappointing… after all, it is the experience we seek.
