Slightly larger than Vermont, Rwanda is the 144th largest country with the 76th densest population.  Land locked north by Uganda, west by Congo along with the lovely Lake Kiva, south by Burundi and east by Tanzania, this small coffee powerhouse can produce incredibly complex and flavorful brews.  The French reference this gem as “Pays des mille collines” or “Land of a thousand hills” which, when considering the countries equatorial proximity, make ideal growing conditions for arabica coffee.  The Gakenke coffee district is located in the countries Northern Province approximately 40 miles northwest of the capital Kigali with growing elevations approximately 5600 – 6200 feet. Rwanda is a rugged country with a complicated political past.  The 1994 genocide resulted in a broken country immersed in chaos and tumult leaving approximately 1.1 million killed.  Victims were disproportionately men and, traditionally being responsible for coffee cultivation, the workforce was decimated.   From the ashes of tragedy rises the phoenix of resurrection, which, in this case, being a determined group of women.  The Hingakawa CO-OP group was born… a venture forged by women with a grit difficult to imagine. The same machete used to destroy is now a tool of redemption and healing that prunes the bush that provides such a heavenly bounty.  Our abundant country provides time of grace to reflect on those thoughtfully kind hands that cultivate this wonderful experience… with a grateful heart I say Thank You.  Hingakawa translates to “Let us grow coffee” and wow is this coffee cultivated with gusto…  an iron fist in a velvet glove.  Clean bright flavor with balanced fruited sweetness, floral characteristics and tea like finish.  You can, of course, drink with gusto, however, if you are patient and gently sip as the cup cools, the rewards are exponential.  A cornucopia of flavor develops with an elegance worth the time.
